For this young age group, PYH recommends sticks with straight blades, unless you are confident that your skater shoots from the left or right side. To measure proper stick length, sticks should be placed with the blade touching the floor and held in a vertical position against your skater while he/she is standing in stocking feet. The stick should not extend beyond the tip of the child’s nose as the child holds his/her head level and steady. This means that on the ice the stick will extend to the child’s chin, which is ideal. Sticks too long are too unwieldy for children to handle. To allow an extra inch for growth is perfectly acceptable.
